TRION AIR CLEANERS ARE THE 'REAL McKAY'

Top-of-the-range electrostatic air cleaning technology from Trion - the most established name in the sector - is ensuring that customers can breathe in the atmosphere, but not the tobacco smoke, at The Real McKay, a traditional real ale pub in Kilsyth, near Glasgow.

Owned and operated by the Bridge of Allan Brewery, The Real McKay has recently undergone substantial renovation to improve its decor, bar facilities and the overall appeal of the pub to customers. But on re-opening to the public, tobacco smoke was proving to be a lingering concern.

"Cigarette smoke hung like a smog over the bar" explains Douglas Ross, one of the Brewery's Directors and Manager of The Real McKay. "Along with a number of our customers and the bar staff, I too am a non-smoker and found the atmosphere, like them, quite oppressive. To improve our service levels and profitability, we also wanted to offer food in the bar area. Unless we solved the tobacco smoke problem, this would be impossible". Douglas Ross contacted Trion's Motherwell-based distributor, StrathAir for help.

StrathAir's survey of the site revealed that finding the space for air cleaner installation in The Real McKay was a key challenge. Available wall space was either insufficient or unsuitable for fitting a unit, whilst the low ceiling height meant that only a discreet, ceiling recessed air cleaner solution could work. Trion's new 120 Series unit presented the perfect solution for the project.

With its ultra-slim profile of just 242mm, this smart-looking air cleaner was able to fit neatly within the ceiling to give a clean, attractive appearance, without intruding into the limited headroom space of the bar area itself. The unit is large enough in capacity to provide efficient air cleaning performance, removing smoke at an air volume rate up to 1680m3/hr. Two 150mm fresh air inlets enable fresh air to be drawn in through the unit, entrained with re-circulated air and cleaned. The 120 unit also has innovative arc suppression circuitry as a standard feature, to minimise "cracking". Supply and installation of the new Series 120 unit was completed by StrathAir in April 2000.

"The Trion air cleaner has completely removed the smoke problem, allowing us to move ahead now with our plans for bar food" adds Douglas Ross. "The benefit of having the air cleaner has already been reflected in better bar takings, with the new 'clean' atmosphere helping to attract more customers through the door, and make it more pleasant for them to stay."

Trion has over 50 years experience at the forefront of air cleaning technology and provides the hospitality sector with the widest range of electrostatic air cleaners on the market. These include the 60 and 120 Series units, the AL, G, and FL range of ultra-modern wall and ceiling mounted air cleaners together with the established Space Saver, Profile, Supreme and Max V units.

Trion has vigorously supported the AIR Campaign since its inception, as well as the test procedures carried out by BSRIA to verify noise levels, air volumes and cleaning efficiency of air cleaners as part of the Public Places Charter (PPC). All Trion products are being tested under this initiative and the results will be published in due course. Trion is part of the Fedders Engineered Product Group.
